Andrew Steele was a gentle and passionate person who loved to share his time with anyone in need. He spent a week sleeping on a floor of a church while volunteering to chop trees and clean debris in Biloxi, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. He would drive to any friend’s house who needed his help. Andrew, who never had much money, would loan all he had to his friends. He was “generous to a fault” as some would say but we believe it was one of his many positive attributes.

Andrew began volunteering his time at the Atlanta Community Food Bank many years ago and developed a love for Bill Bolling, Founder of the Food Bank. Later, after moving to Athens, Andrew volunteered at the Food Bank of North Georgia. Although Andrew never had much money, he would find a way to serve. He picked up people off the streets of Athens and drove them to Wal-Mart to buy clothes, medicine and other necessities and then take them to his home to shower, relax, sleep and he would feed them. His parents pleaded with him for safety reasons to not do that but Andrew was determined to help in his meager way. Andrew had a very good heart and he loved all people regardless of any artificial description that folks use to divide God’s children.

It is only fitting that rather than flowers or plants that would brighten our day, we ask those willing to honor Andrew to do so by making a donation to the Atlanta Community Food Bank.
